BESLA Board of Director/MYC Co-Chair

Director, Business & Legal Affairs, Original Series, Netflix

Tony Brackett graduated Summa Cum Laude from Benedict College in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast and News Editorial Journalism. At the University of South Carolina School of Law, which he graduated from in 1994, he was a member of the National Moot Court Team, the Order of Barristers (top eight) for Moot Court and a student prosecutor for the Honor Council.  He was the only black person and the only male to make the Order of the Barristers that year.

His first job out of law school was with the Law Office of Franchot Brown where he was a litigation attorney in contracts and domestic law, also handling criminal and trusts and estates cases. While there, he began developing an entertainment law practice representing local artists and producers. He followed that with a 2-year stint in the Corporate Trust department at BankAmerica, and then went to work for Seeger Weiss in New York, where he negotiated and arbitrated settlements for plaintiffs on class action insurance claims.

In August of 2000 he joined ABC News. During his 12 years there, he held numerous positions with varying responsibilities including negotiating production company deals, producer and talent agreements, and concert specials, drafting, and executing all licensing agreements for studios, networks, and production companies that requested footage from ABC news shows and specials. He also supervised a permissions staff on footage requests and facilitated videotape production of segments for licensing from all network news shows including 20/20, Nightline, World News Tonight, Good Morning America, and Primetime Live. In December of 2012, he accepted a position with the Walt Disney Company in Burbank as Executive Director of Business Affairs for the Disney Cable Networks Group.   At Disney he was responsible for negotiating acquisitions and unscripted programming deals, and live action series talent, writer and producer deals for Disney Channel and Disney XD, and for business and legal affairs for Disney Junior in both live action and animation.  He was promoted to Vice President in 2015.

Tony joined Netflix in 2017 and was tasked with helping to set up the deal-making and business affairs strategy for the Kids & Family team for live action and animation programming.  He currently supports the Original Series team as Director, Business & Legal Affairs for Original Series. His responsibilities include structuring and negotiating deals for “above-the line” talent, negotiating option purchase agreements and complex rights deals, providing strategy and budget input, and counseling creative, finance and production.  He oversees the US Series Payment Administration and Option Tracking team and is a Co-Head of the US & Canada Series Legal Team where he helps to oversee legal strategy, forms and procedures.
