Shirin Malkani is co-chair of Perkins Coie’s Sports industry group. Her practice centers on live sports rights, coming to the business over fifteen years ago after ten years as a digital media attorney focused on premium content distribution.  Hired as the NBA’s first digital lawyer in 2008, she moved to the business side shortly thereafter. As Senior Vice President of Global Media Distribution, she managed the league’s domestic rights portfolio that included both traditional TV and digital rights. Her dealmaking included negotiating the league’s 2014 national TV rights packages with Disney and Turner, taking NBA League Pass cross-platform and carriage of NBA TV by MVPDs. Since joining Perkins in September 2022, Shirin had continued to operate at this intersection of streaming and television distribution models, representing clients ranging from YouTube to the start-up National Pickleball League. NFL Sunday Ticket is among the major live sports rights acquisition deals Shirin has done for YouTube. Shirin is often quoted in press outlets as diverse as The Hollywood Reporter, CNBC and Business Insider and serves on the Advisory Committee for the ABA’s Sports Section.
