"The General Counsel's Forum" served as the opening event for this year's BESLA Sports Forum series. Hosted by BESLA board member Tony Brackett, Esq., the forum was held at the ABC Television Building in New York City.
Surrounded by a panoramic view overlooking Central Park, Richard Berthelsen, Esq., General Counsel, National Football League Players Association; Jessica Berman, Esq., Associate General Counsel, National Hockey League and Jeff Gewirtz, Esq., Senior Vice President & General Counsel, New Jersey Nets briefed attendees on the different roles of a general counsel in a league, team and player association.
Moderated by BESLA ‘s Vice President Sports and board member John C. Graves, Esq., the panel featured discussion on various duties of a general counsel, addressing such issues as salary cap negotiations; injury claims; immigration issues; team infractions and relocation challenges. The general counsels outlined their daily responsibilities before participating in Q&A with the rapt audience of approximately 60 attorneys, financial advisors and students.
